The Flames qualified for the 2009 NHL Playoffs and faced a powerhouse Chicago Blackhawks team that had beaten them 4 times in the regular season. They did manage two wins against them but lost in a six game series to the Blackhawks. The Flames enter the 2009/10 NHL Season with new head coach Brent Sutter who replaces Mike Keenan. With the 23rd pick in the NHL Entry Draft, the franchise selected Swedish standout Tim Erixon who is currently playing in the Swedish Elite League Elitserien.
The team is currently sitting in third place in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. They have a record of 28-21-8.
The 2007/08 Flames saw a number of major events happen to the franchise. Mike Keenan replaced Jim Playfair, Al MacInnis was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, The Flames became only the third team in NHL history to win every game of a 6-game road trip. In February, the 2007 5th round draft pick Mickey Renaud collapsed and died at 19-years of age. Jarome Iginla set a franchise record playing in his 804th game and only two nights later recorded his 700th career point and on March 10, 2008 surpassed Theoren Fleury as the Flames All Time Goal Scoring Leader.
